How to Get Pet Hair Out of Sofa Fabric

Illustration: brushing pet hair out of a sofa cushion in long strokes

Pet hair does not sit on top of upholstery. It works its way down into the weave and locks there, which is why a wipe with a damp cloth seems to do nothing: you are moving the hair around, not out of it. This is the order that works.

Start with what the hair is caught on

Woven fabric is a grid of threads. Short hairs, curly hairs and the soft undercoat are thin enough to slip between them, and the friction of daily use pushes them deeper every time you sit down. A vacuum nozzle is wide and smooth, so it tends to glide across the top of that grid; the hair left behind after vacuuming is the hair that had already worked itself in.

The four-step pass

  1. Brush in long strokes, not circles. Drag a textured surface across the cushion toward you. Long strokes lift hair out along the grain; scrubbing motions push it back down.
  2. Do the seams second. Where two panels meet, hair collects in the channel. Turn the brush on its edge and run it along each seam.
  3. Lift what the cushion released. The hair now sits loose on the surface. Pick it up before it settles back into the weave.
  4. Finish with the vacuum. Now that the deep hair is on the surface, the vacuum has something it can actually remove.

Work the back of the cushion and the gap behind the seat as well. That is where most people stop, and it is where the layer is thickest.

What helps, and what does not

  • A rubber or loop-textured brush. Grips hair out of the weave and releases it in one piece. The one we stock is here: Double-Sided Pet Hair Remover Brush.
  • A clean window squeegee. On flat-weave fabric it behaves much like rubber nubs. Keep it off loose knits, which it will catch and pull.
  • Damp rubber gloves. Put on household gloves, run them slightly wet and wipe the cushion. The hair balls up and lifts. Slower than a brush, but useful on a sofa you do not want to scrub.
  • Roll-on sticky tape. Grabs only what is already on the surface, and you go through a lot of sheets getting the same result.
  • Vacuuming harder. If the nozzle did not reach it the first time, more passes usually do not either.

Two habits that matter more than the tool

Pass over the sofa once or twice a week rather than once a month, so hair never gets the chance to pack in. And brush or shake out the pet blanket before it goes into the machine, instead of letting the wash move the fur around onto everything else in the drum.

For covers, cushions and anything machine-washable, check the manufacturer label first. Delicate, satin and loose-weave fabrics can snag under a brush, so test an inconspicuous corner before doing the whole seat.

Our grooming and cleaning tools are made for fabrics, not for the animal. If something about your pet coat or skin is worrying you, that is a question for your vet rather than a stronger brush.
